KTI Technologies, Inc.’s Safety Light Press Brake Accessory PB-4 065-AS is a control reliable device able to provide the required signal to mute the Safety Light during the non-hazardous portion (return) of the stroke. OSHA allows the Safety Light to be muted (turned off) from not greater than 1/4” before die closure until completion of the stroke. As this is an adjustable device therefore it is essential that all personnel involved with the operation of machines equipped with the PB-4065-AS be trained to the proper use and regulations regarding the operation of this device.

WARNING!! KTI Technologies PB-4065-AS is an adjustable safety device and subject to the rules and regulations covering the use of this unit. This device effects point of operation safeguarding, only personnel authorized by the user should be involved in the set-up and operational testing of this device. This device MUST be adjusted each time a new die-set or shut height change occurs to ensure that the PB-4065-AS is adjusted properly allowing safety light muting to occur at NO greater distance than ¼” before die closure. The safety lights must always be active from top position to the ¼” die closure point. Any variation to this governing operation is in direct violation of OSHA and ANSI regulations and to the intended design of this product.

THE POWER PRESS BRAKE:
.
The power press brake is one of the most versatile machines in the metal fabricator’s plant. Its long, narrow work area enable thousands of different part configurations to be formed using general purpose tooling. Usually press brakes are used for small and medium lot size work. It is the tool that produces many of the items used by our society today. Items ranging from metal office furniture to highway road guards and truck cabs and trailers to roof decking are just a few of the many products produced by this type of machine. Originally the power press brake was designed for long straight angle bending work and it still does the majority of this type of work today. However, press brakes are also being used to punch, notch, and form other shapes and seems to be only as limited as the limit of the imagination of the user.
.
Power press brakes are not power punch presses but a totally distinct machine by themselves. The reason for this is their long, narrow design and the work they are designed to do (i.e. long angle bends). Doing this type of work requires that the material move either up or down during the forming stroke. Thus support of the material while it is being formed by the operator or operators is necessary. Since the material usually projects out in from of the point of operation and requires hand support, a foot operated control for control of the ram speed is mandatory. Because of this, power press brakes are either partial revolution clutch or hydraulic powered machine to give operators the ability to stop them at any portion of the die closing stroke.

SAFEGUARDI NG:
.
The above features are only a few of the differences between press brakes and power punch presses but they certainly point out the need for different treatment when considering safeguarding of the point of operation of press brakes and developing your press brake safety programs. This is whey the American National Standards Institute developed a separate safety standard for power press brakes entitled ANSI B11.3. This standard was first published in 1973 and is a good source of information on the construction, care and use of this type of equipment.
.
Selecting point of operation safeguarding for a press brake is a major requirement for a good safety program. But it will probably be one of the hardest projects to undertake because of the vast variety of uses your press brake is used for today. ANSI B11.3 suggests reviewing each and every part to be formed on a press brake and then selecting the appropriate safeguard to use. Obviously, this is a difficult task at best and just about impossible if you have a job shop and do not know what work you will be asked to do next.
.
Nevertheless, both ANSI B11.3 and OSHA 1910.212 require that the point of operation of a press brake be safeguarded. That means that some type of safeguarding method (i.e. guard, device, safe method) must be present while operating a press brake to protect operators and other workers from injury at the area where the forming work is being done. Since press brakes are long, narrow machines that form parts which often move outside of the machine during forming, the point of operation (work area) is really undefined until complete knowledge about the job is known. Thus, the piece part, the dies or tooling, the machine, and the method of feeding and removing the price part all must be known in order to select a safeguarding method which will work. This is the reason that selection of the proper safeguarding method falls on the user of the press brake. The user is the only one who knows all of this information. To do this job it requires that you look at each job which runs across your press brake and devise a systematic approach to protecting your workers from the hazards created by the work you are trying to do. Three things to keep in mind when doing this:
.
1. There is no single universal guard or device which will cover all jobs your will want to do on your press brake.
.
2. A press brake used in a typical plant will need several different safeguarding methods in order to cover the majority of work performed.
.
3. There will be some jobs for which safeguarding, as we know it, cannot be used effectively.

.
The PB-4065-AS Controls the muting point of the safety light curtain system. When used correctly the unit, in conjunction with an appropriate safety light curtain device will guard the press brake's point of operation and allow the work to be preformed per OSHA and ANSI requirements.

Over-Ride Detection Limit Switch:

overide.jpg

The over-ride switch is typically mounted so it is actuated by the adjustable actuator when the ram has reached a point in its position where it is 1/4” before Die closure. Since most press brakes employ the use of many different dies, care should be taken when mounting this switch. It must be able to operate with all required diesets.
.
ADJUSTABLE ACTUATOR: The actuator is an adjustable gauge which provides for easy set up after a die change. The placement of the actuator on the ram is critical and requires that all dies used on the press will be able to actuate the over-ride limit switch at 1/4” before closure. Once set up for a particular die, the scale markings should be transferred to the die to aid in the set up of that particular die for future use.
